Physical Therapy

Huffman pt

Physical therapist Jason Huffman works with a patient.

Physical therapy is a rehabilitation specialty that uses specific exercises and equipment to help you regain or improve your physical abilities. Anyone suffering from sports or orthopedic-related injuries can benefit from physical therapy by regaining strength and endurance. At the Marshall Sports Medicine Institute, the Physical Therapy Program:

  • offers conservative treatments that relieve pain and promote healing
  • provides home exercise programs and education on injury prevention, and
  • encourages you to be a proactive participant in your rehabilitation.

The goal of our program is to maximize results, shorten recover times and prevent re-injury.

Conditions Treated

Garton pt3

Physical therapist Tom Garton uses a cold intermittent compression device to help accelerate recovery.

While we are fortunate to work with some of the best athletes in our region, we pride ourselves in treating people of all ages and walks of life. There are many types of injuries that respond to physical therapy. The most common conditions we treat include:

  • Sports injuries
  • Repetitive/overuse injuries
  • Shoulder/rotator cuff injuries
  • Knee/hip injuries
  • Foot and ankle pain
  • Tendonitis/bursitis
  • Arthritis
  • Post-surgery care

We Focus on You

Garton BAPS

Using a BAPS board can improve ankle mobility and stabilization.

The cornerstone of our program is our focus on individualized attention for each client. You will receive a thorough evaluation and assessment that addresses your individual needs and establishes a treatment plan specific to your condition and individual health status, including your injury, lifestyle, age and sport/activity as well as your goals and expectations. Other individual factors, such as your movement patterns, posture and body alignment, are considered in developing the most effective customized physical therapy and rehabilitation plan for you. Just as no two patients are exactly the same, no two treatment plans are exactly the same.

Your customized treatment plan will be designed to increase strength, restore range of motion and alleviate pain. As appropriate, your plan will incorporate the most recent advancements in physical therapy, such as:

  • Manual therapy techniques
  • Joint mobilization
  • Trigger point therapy & myofascial release
  • Muscle energy techniques
  • Postural training
  • Strength, flexibility & mobility training
  • Kinesio TapingĀ®
  • Balance/proprioceptive training
  • Post-operative rehabilitation
  • Modalities
  • Therapeutic exercise
  • Home exercise programs

During physical therapy, we continuously reassess and monitor changes and improvements in your condition so that we can modify your treatment plan accordingly. We invite and strongly encourage your active participation because it is the most effective and consistent way to achieve your goals. We provide the resources for you to take an active role in your own recovery with home exercise programs, treatment-related information and options for continuing your recovery after the formal physical therapy process has been completed.

Our Team

The MSMI Physical Therapy Program takes great pride in having some of the best clinicians in the region on staff. All MSMI physical therapists are board certified in orthopedics by the American Physical Therapy Association, and two physical therapists are certified in sports medicine as well as orthopedics. These certifications require years of training as well as passing a rigorous national certification exam. Two physical therapy assistants are Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioners. Our team members continuously improve and advance their clinical knowledge, so that you receive the most current, effective state-of-the-art treatment.
